As a resident physician, I was relieved to see the Supreme Court uphold the Affordable Care Act. In the hospital, I've seen the challenges facing patients who navigate a complex health care system.
I once had an employed patient who expressed his concern over the costs of critical care even as he was being wheeled to the intensive care unit. This should never happen during a life-threatening emergency.
The court's opinion allows us to continue our efforts to give health care access to all Americans. No one should ever be denied coverage for a pre-existing condition, nor file bankruptcy due to insurmountable medical bills.
Over the next several years, my colleagues and I will work to increase health care access for everyone who comes through our door.
