I see that letter writer Vince Gardina supports the idea of armed guards in schools, as long as he doesn't have to pay for them ("Let gun owners pay for armed school guards," Dec. 27).
I can see some of his reasoning. Unfortunately, the same reasoning could be applied to the problem of deaths due to drunk driving.
If we applied ridiculous increases to vehicle license and registration fees, increased the gas tax so only the wealthiest could afford to drive and banned sports cars — which, after all, have no family or business use — then possibly we could cut deaths from drunken driving.
Oh, wait. The governor already has done most of those things — and I don't know if they've had any effect at all on drunk driving. But they certainly have driven me to drink.
