Hamas is indifferent to the death and destruction in Gaza [Letter]

David Zurawik's article about news coverage of the war in Gaza points out how quickly public opinion has turned against Israel ("Gripping, heartrending Gaza images lead to shift in PR war," July 25).

However, images and perceptions can mask reality. As the death toll in Gaza exceeds 1,000, the reality of depraved indifference by Hamas, the real cause of this tragic loss of life, is deflected by the horrific visuals and reports of suffering.

Thus, even if there is a lengthy cease fire, Hamas will live to attack again; Israel will defend herself; and the people of Gaza will continue to suffer the depraved indifference of Hamas.
