In response to Brenda Payne's open letter to state Attorney General Douglas Gansler, I say hats off to Ms. Payne ("Dear Mr. Gansler," May 20).

I was a teacher years ago but left when my children were born. However, my husband was a teacher in Baltimore City for 31 years, and my daughter has been teaching in Baltimore County for 15 years.

I also volunteer several days a week at the local elementary school and work with some wonderful teachers. All of the teachers I know are skilled, devoted to their students and work very hard.

Teaching is certainly not a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. job. Teachers spend many hours before and after school planning, getting materials ready and grading papers. They certainly are not paid what they are worth, and they often do not get the respect they deserve.

I am in agreement with Ms. Payne that Mr. Gansler will not get my vote in the upcoming election.
