What does Ryan Flaherty, the Orioles second baseman, have to do to be appreciated ("Expecting the old Brian Roberts ignores his career's new realities," June 23) especially by your columnist Peter Schmuck? He has the first or second best fielding record at second base in his league, has hit five home runs, and has a rising batting average.
There is a statistic that shows how many runs a fielder has saved, which Mr. Schmuck might look up. This is prompted by the insult tossed Mr. Flaherty's way, to wit, if Brian Roberts or Jonathan Schoop don't make it, the Orioles might have to "gut it out" with Mr. Flaherty until the off-season, and then either wait for Mr. Schoop or look outside the organization. I suggest that the Orioles and Mr. Schmuck look in their own backyard and realize what a prize they already have.
