Congress declared 200 years ago the U.S. isn't a Christian nation [Letter]

Commentator Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. missed a seminal fact in his recent column on public prayer ("Freedom of, not from, religion," June 1).

To wit: The Senate unanimously ratified the Treaty of Tripoli in 1797, whose Article XI read in part that "the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."

That was more than 200 years ago, and it's another reason why that period in history was known as the Enlightenment.
