America has a moral responsibility to victims of persecution and violence [Letter]

A recent letter writer likened the current turning away of Latino children with the turning away of potential victims of the Holocaust during the 1930s ("Are we sending migrant children back to their deaths?" July 18).

It seems unimaginable that Americans could do such a thing. Yet U.S. officials turned away hundreds of Jewish refugees from Hitler when they arrived in this country aboard a ship named the St. Louis. They returned to Europe and were accepted by England and Holland.

A year later the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and the Jews there were promptly sent to concentration camps and likely death.

Let's hope a similar horror does not await these children.
