I was bewildered that a new Baltimore County Animal Control will be built on the existing grounds of the current facility which is located in Baldwin ("Baltimore Co. to build $5 million animal shelter," Oct. 21). This current facility is not accessible to the majority of Baltimore residents. The Baldwin facility is over 20 miles from Interstate 695 in the middle of an affluent sparsely populated suburban area. As of the 2010 census, Baldwin had fewer than 4,000 of Baltimore County's 805,029 residents. With Baltimore County spread around the beltway, Baldwin sits at the far north end.

The Baldwin land was left to Baltimore County in a will for animal care purposes. It is shortsighted, however, to spend $5 million to build a new facility in an area that will not adequately serve the animals and people of Baltimore County.

I know that the time is well past for a new shelter to replace the antiquated one, but I hope that the county executive and council will look for a more central location.
