Federal employees should be concerned about their employment security, not just their pensions and medical benefits ( "Federal workers afraid of cuts" June. 27). Their employer, our federal government, has embarked on massive unfunded spending programs featuring huge increases in new spending due to Obamacare and a myriad of other new initiatives over the last 10 years while facing funding shortfalls in existing entitlements. The number of new federal employees has grown by about 100,000, and there has been no change in the fringe benefit programs each is promised as part of their employment agreement.
If this were the "real" world these promises and actions would never have happened. It is only in the public sector that programs are approved by our legislators and president without the ability to pay for them. So public employees should look to their employer, not the American taxpayer, for answers to their problem.
It is not helpful for our legislators, like Rep. Chris Von Hollen, to state that "federal workers should not bear the burden of deficit reduction," or for Rep. John Sarbanes to state that "he is very wary of new proposals for [debt reduction] to impact federal employees since he feels that they have already given at the office"! Messrs. Von Hollen and Sarbanes, along with most of the Maryland legislative cadre, voted for all of the unfunded federal spending programs and cannot avoid answering to the citizenry and federal employees for the problems that they have created.
When can we catch a whiff of fiscal sanity from our elected representatives? Today that whiff is of corrupt and rotten unfunded programs that are well meaning but not working. We are headed for the economic woodshed along with other profligate nations like Greece and Portugal. And yet we wonder why the electorate is increasingly skeptical about our country's future.
