A reader asked why churches care about gay marriages (Readers respond, Nov. 15). Churches have always tried to get people to do what's right and to avoid evil. The Bible says that sex between two men or two women is wrong. It's unfortunate that the Ten Commandments don't say the same thing. "Thou shall not commit adultery" isn't any help when it comes to unions involving the same sex.

My question is why haven't the churches spoken out sooner on this subject and others, including abortion? They can't save their role of teaching what's right just to their congregations. The world, and especially this country, has become too small for those who have "The Good News" to keep it to themselves. They must branch out. This becomes more essential as the government attempts to impose its views concerning morality on society.

My hope is that at least one memeber of the clergy will respond to this question. They would certainly provide a better explanation than a lay person can.
