John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, was born Aug. 29, 1936, in Panama. The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he spent more than 20 years in the Navy, a quarter of it in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. McCain served two terms in the U.S. House before he ran successfully for the Senate in 1986. He ran for president in 2000 and won the New Hampshire primary and a handful of other states before conceding the race to George W. Bush. He and his wife, Cindy, have four children. McCain also has three children from his first marriage.
