The Walters Art Museum features more than 28,000 works of art from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Europe. The Walters bequest is still considered among the greatest acts of cultural philanthropy in the nation's history. In 2000, the Walters Art Gallery changed its name to the Walters Art Museum to reflect its image as a large public institution. After being closed for three years to undergo a $24 million renovation, the Centre Street building reopened in 2001 with 39 reconfigured galleries, redesigned lobbies, a four-story glass entryway and other improvements. In 2006, a grant allowed the Walters and the Baltimore Museum of Art to make their admission free. That move sparked the creation of Free Fall Baltimore, a series of no-charge performances held around the city. The Walters is located at 600 N. Charles St., in Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon Cultural District. The main entrance is on Centre Street near the corner of Centre and Cathedral streets.
