The Chicago Cubs, one of the oldest professional sports franchises in North America, played their first National League game on April 25, 1876. Coincidentally, they also have the longest championship droughts among the major sports, having gone an entire century since last winning the World Series in 1908.

The Cubs have not even gone to the Series since 1945, when local tavern owner William "Billygoat" Sianis placed a curse on the team after they refused to let his goat into a World Series game against Detroit. The tag "lovable losers" is synonymous with the Cubs, who finished in the bottom half of the league standings in every season from 1947-66. As former broadcaster Jack Brickhouse once lamented: "Anyone can have a bad century." The 1969 team that blew an 8 1/2 game lead to the New York Mets after leading its division most of the season remains one of the most beloved in Chicago history in spite of its infamous collapse. On the few occasions the Cubs have come close since, fate has somehow intervened. The most recent example occurred in 2003, when the Cubs were within five outs of advancing to the World Series before losing to Florida in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, in what is now known as the "Bartman game."

Tampa Bay-Boston rivalry has punch
Associated PressExactly why the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays tangle so much is hard to tell. Blame it on a high-and-tight pitch here, a hard slide there. Whatever, this much is true: The teams playing in the American League Championship Series sure get into a lot...Tags: Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox, Major League Baseball, Manny Ramirez, American League

Broken-hearted fans
The Cubs will always break our hearts. It's sad. The Cubs need to hire witch doctors, exorcists or other experts in the occult to remove the curse. —Daniel Beck, GlenviewTags: Glenview

A great season
So what if the Cubs got swept by the Dodgers? The Cubs played a great season, and I think getting upset over a few games just isn't worth it. Let's take pride in the best record in baseball! Who needs a few nice rings on their fingers, anyway? —... -
That's it folks
'Twas the month of October in 1908; hardly a person can now relate to that once famous series of yore. The Chicago Cubs were at their best; they put the Tigers team to the test. But sorry to say, there's no more. —James R. Schaefer, Mt. ProspectTags: Major League Baseball

Character builders
I am an ex-Chicagoan, who, though a South Sider, was hopelessly addicted to the Cubs. Still am. I was with an Army unit in 1945 on remote Attu Island in the Aleutians, listening on short-wave radio the last time the Cubs made it to the World Series. I'm... -
Swan song
In response to the Cubs' early post-season exit, I offer the following, sung to the tune of "Go, Cubs, Go," the chant commonly heard after each Cubs victory at Wrigley Field: Woe, Cubs, woe; woe, Cubs, woe; hey Chicago, whaddaya say, the Cubs have left me...Tags: Wrigley Field, Major League Baseball

Ready and willing
How fitting that the Cubs' season ends as so many moments did for them this year: with a strikeout—a weak strikeout on a bad pitch—by Alfonso Soriano. Please let the new ownership know that I can strike out in big-game situations, and I'll...Tags: Brian Wilson, Alfonso Soriano

Fukudome will have competition in right field
Tribune reporterThe answer was so stunning and out of character that the first thought on everyone's mind was there must have been some problem with the translation. Orlando is No. 30 among America's top sports cities
Frankly, I'm shocked. Sporting News has released its 15th annual list of America's "top 400 sports cities and towns in the United States and Canada (no word on Mexico apparently)" and Orlando is 30th! Boston is No. 1. Good for them but they get more...Tags: Cloris Leachman, Jay Leno, Boston Red Sox, Wine, Beer, and Spirits, Alfonso Soriano
