State is improving waterfront access
A recent letter highlighted the value of our waterways and the need to ensure that the state continues to work to restore their health and increase public access to them ("Public needs access to more of the bay," July 1).
However, since the inception of Maryland's Waterway Improvement Fund, the state has funded the creation and maintenance of more than 300 boating access sites.
Baltimore County has more than a dozen public parks on the water for citizens to enjoy, including Gunpowder State Park, Dundee Creek Marina, Wilson Point Park, Turner Station, Rocky Point Park and Merritt Point Park.
Several counties are developing plans for new access points as well.
Cecil County has just started the development of Elk River Park, and Anne Arundel County is looking into the development of a new boating facility in the northern part of the county.
And this year, Gov. Martin O'Malley and the state legislature dedicated more than $20 million in the state's budget for 130 projects in 21 counties and Baltimore to improve public waterway access and support safe boating.
