Israeli mourning honors war dead
What a sad comparison the Israeli prisoner exchange suggests ("A wave of anguish in Israel," July 18).
I don't mean between the grief in Israel and the Lebanese dancing and celebrating when a known killer is released - we have come to expect that.
I refer to the difference in the manner in which the Israelis welcome home their war dead and the way in which we honor those who have given their lives for this country.
In Israel, the government was represented at the border exchange with Lebanon. Reporters and cameramen were there to record this sad, tragic transfer. An entire country mourned Israel's war dead anew.
Yet here, by government fiat, we receive our dear dead in the night, at Dover Air Force Base, under cover, not greeted by family and hidden from us all.
What has happened to our sense of respect, our devotion, our gratitude, our soul?
