On March 10, the Sun published a letter on the proposed merger between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The writer asserted that "College Park has the only public health program" at any public university in the state ("UM has been taking what should be Baltimore's for years").
This statement is not true. The University of Maryland School of Medicine, which is located in Baltimore, has a thriving, fully accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program in its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. In addition, contrary to the writer's assertion, we have for many years offered collaborative dual degree programs with the UMB schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing pharmacy and social work. We also collaborate closely with the School of Public Health in College Park.
We are not weighing in on the debate over the merger. But we want to correct this factual error so that your readers will know that UMB already has a vital public health program right here in Baltimore.
