The following is a summary of The Sun's endorsements in a variety of contested races for state and local office in the Baltimore area. For more information on the candidates in these and other races, please see The Sun's 2014 primary election Voter Guide.

Democrats: Among three well-qualified Democrats in the race, The Sun endorses Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, a partner in Gov. Martin O'Malley's successes over the past eight years who has displayed a good sense of how to build on that record, chiefly by emphasizing economic development. His lofty goal: to make Maryland the most business friendly state in the nation. Read our full endorsement of Anthony Brown here.

Republicans: Businessman and former state cabinet secretary Larry Hogan gets our endorsement from a crowded field of candidates. He combines sensible, realistic ideas about how to govern the state with a single-minded focus on improving Maryland's business climate. That's a good issue and a good strategy for a Republican in a heavily Democratic state. Read our full endorsement of Larry Hogan here.

Attorney General

Democrats: State Sen. Brian E. Frosh gets our enthusaistic endorsement. He combines a tremendous depth of knowledge in environmental, social justice and consumer issues from his years as a committee chairman in Annapolis with an inclusive, fair-minded disposition. He would be an outstanding attorney general. Read our full endorsement here.

Republicans: Jeffrey N. Pritzker is unopposed.

Anne Arundel County

County executive: Though Republican incumbent County Executive Laura Neuman is a strong candidate in this hard-fought race, we endorse Del. Steve Schuh based on his more expansive vision for the county. Read our full endorsement here.

District 30A: Voters in this district have the good fortune to be represented by House Speaker Michael E. Busch, a conscientious lawmaker who has shown great skill in managing his chamber and helping his district. He has our endorsement, as does Cheryl Miller. Read our full endorsement here.

District 31A: We endorse former Anne Arundel County School Board President Ned Carey, a Democrat. Read our full endorsement here.
