( April 6, 2012 ) Maryland has put a hold on exploitation of its natural gas resources trapped in the Marcellus Shale formation so state officials can conduct a study of hydraulic fracturing, the technique that has come under much scrutiny from environmentalists in other states. But Maryland has no money appropriated to conduct the study. Legislation passed the House of Delegates to assess a per acre fee on land that is subject to natural gas leases in Western Maryland, but it has not yet emerged from a Senate committee. |
