Fanatical fans

Why do we worship disgraced athletes as heroes?

Len Bias, a star basketball player who died of a drug overdose on campus the same day he was drafted by the Boston Celtics, is inducted into the University of Maryland Hall of Fame.

Ray Lewis, a great linebacker who was implicated in a double murder, gets a statue at M&T Bank Stadium.

Ray Rice, an accomplished running back, gets an ovation at a Ravens' preseason game even before the flap over his highly-publicized domestic violence case subsides.

What an utter disgrace. As Steve Spurrier might say: You can't spell fanatic without f-a-n.
