A president's beginnings

Barack ObamaJohn F. KennedyMitt Romney

In reading Thomas F. Schaller's commentary ("The virtues of a president with humble origins," Oct. 31), I didn't see John F. Kennedy's name listed as one of our wealthiest presidents. "Mitt Romney was born to both political and economic privilege" made the list, yet President Kennedy somehow did not? How convenient for columnists to leave out certain little facts to promote their biased agenda.

I wouldn't classify Barack Obama's origins as humble. I would call them more bizarre. His father (who had five wives) left before young Barack was one year old and his mother shipped him from Indonesia at the young age of 10 to his grandparents in Hawaii. He was exposed to a lot of weird people at a very young age. I'm surprised he's functioned so well as a regular person, let alone as president.

Perhaps Mr. Schaller studied under some of the same people Mr. Obama did.
