The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 27 recently testified in favor of Penn National Gaming's proposal to put the Prince George's County casino license at Rosecroft Raceway ("Penn National raises stakes in fight for P.G. Co. casino license," Oct. 21). There is one reason that stands above the rest as to why we did this: Penn has been a good employer and good partner at Rosecroft and at Hollywood Casino at Perryville where we represent workers. They've honored the agreements they made with us and the workers we represent.
While an employer keeping their word sounds simple, it is not nearly as common as it should be, and it speaks about the character of the company. It should also speak to those who hope to work at the Prince George's County casino one day. Why take a gamble on an employer who doesn't have a proven track record with Maryland workers? Why gamble on a company that hasn't already invested in Maryland?
There is a lot at stake with this new casino. We support those who have proven themselves to be good business partners, good community partners and true to the commitments they've made to their employees.
