The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut focused national attention on the need for stricter gun control, and lawmakers in Annapolis say they are intent on tightening Maryland’s laws. They should certainly strengthen the state’s ban on assault weapons and further limit the size of ammunition magazines allowed in Maryland, but they should also take the opportunity to pass legislation that bear bears directly on the daily scourge of gun violence in Baltimore. The strongest measure they could take would be to initiate a licensing system for gun buyers. The experience of other states suggests that such a law could significantly reduce the straw purchases through which criminals most frequently get handguns. One would think, due to the poor leadership from the governor, The Sun could easily conclude that less government involvement would be the prudent course of action to fix the ills of our state and country ("Annapolis agenda," Jan. 7).
When given the choice, The Sun took the liberal approach to all the issues facing the Maryland General Assembly. Gov. Martin O'Malley (and President Barack Obama) continue to dig the hole deeper, and The Sun is complicit every step of the way.
