I am writing in support of legislation to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour — with an index to adjust it to inflation.
I met with Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake about this matter and she fully supports the increase.
I also met with Gov. Martin O'Malley and the Jews for Justice in October 2013 when the governor indicated he was prepared to put forth the proposed bill in 2014. As this will be a challenging effort, he encouraged those of us in attendance at the meeting to write to our state delegates and senators asking for their support to set this bill in motion.
I stand ready, as does the congregation of New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, to do whatever we can to help. Our goal is to raise the standard of living for those who are disadvantaged by the low wages dictated by Maryland's minimum wage.
We pray that Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Mayor Rawlings-Blake and Governor O'Malley will move forward with this most important issue.
