Having recently had a discussion with a friend regarding our experiences contributing to various charities, I was especially interested in Eileen Ambrose's column on the subject ("What's next after Black Friday and Cyber Monday?" Nov. 25).
I contribute to several local, national and religious charities, and I have experienced problems with most of them. The fundraisers for many charities are relentless. How can bi-weekly solicitations by mail be justified?
When a charity inundates me with solicitations ,it makes think I would be better off contributing to charities that have a business model I can live with. It seems extremely wasteful to send multiple solicitations to the same donor.
At that point it appears that the fundraising arm of the charity is simply trying to justify its existence. Guilt trips really don't help charities in the long run.
Of course, I realize that there will be administrative costs. But I still want most of the money I contribute to go to the cause for which the charity was established, so that contributors retain a belief in the integrity and soundness of the organization.
