Castro handshake reflects poor judgment [Letter]

With the evident agenda of President Barack Obama to make friends of our enemies and to make enemies of our allies, it was understandable that he would not only shake hands with Raul Castro but even exchange pleasantries with that Cuban dictator ("Obama and Castro," Dec. 13). With little regard for the history or the reasons for isolating Cuba and a total lack of understanding of Latin American politics, President Obama has given the seal of approval to a communist regime hostile to the U.S. and engaged in subverting our friends in the region.

The close ties of Cuba to not only Venezuela but to Iran, both hostile toward the U.S., are sufficient cause to hold this dictator at arms length. The imprisonment of U.S. citizens on trumped up charges, including Alan Gross, and the violation of human rights should have sent a message to our president which either he has ignored or acquiesced to.
