The recent Nevada ranchers standoff with the federal government has caused considerable discussion in the media ("After Nevada ranch stand-off, emboldened militias ask: where next?" April 17). On the one side are the supporters of Cliven Bundy and his family, along with the various armed militias that have come to give aid. On the other side are the federal agents who claim they are trying to enforce federal law. We are led to believe that this rebellion was caused by the Bundys allowing their cattle to graze on federal land and not paying the fees and fines imposed on them as a result. Furthermore, the feds are claiming the land is set aside for endangered turtles, even though the feds have been killing off some turtles when the population gets too large.
The media has lead us to believe that the Bundys are acting irresponsibly by resisting federal efforts to restore order and have them pay the fines and fees. The Bundys' rationale is that their family has grazed there for over a 100 years and that the land should belong to the state of Nevada. This land was taken from Mexico in our 1848 war with them and turned into federal land. It was not given to Nevada when it later became a state.
Both of these arguments are merely a mask for the underlying reasons for this conflict. In truth, it's an eruption over conservatism versus liberalism that has been plaguing out country for decades and climaxing under President Barack Obama and his open attempts to transform our country into a more socialist-like state. The conservatives see an administration that encourages illegal immigration to gain more Democratic voters, an administration that picks and chooses what laws it decides to enforce, an administration that violates its own laws by not handing over needed information in the "Fast and Furious" gun sting that went wrong, impeding Congressional attempts to investigate the IRS scandal, Benghazi and the NSA scandal, as well as a whole array of other matters shoved down the throats of conservative America. The feds, in a child-like effort to bully the conservatives and show who's the boss, want to pull guns or Tasers on the crowd rather than deal with the matter strictly through the courts.
What the Bundys and the armed militia are actually saying is, we've had enough of this liberalism, and we're ready to defend our way of life by almost any means at our disposal. The media's attempt to intellectualize such an unspoken emotional argument shows they just don't get the point.
