Roland Edward Tibbetts passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2011, at Hiland Cottage at age 93.
He was truly a member of the "greatest generation:" A man of integrity, quiet strength, diligence and respect.
Roland was born April 12, 1918, in Clintonville, Wis., the son of George H. Tibbetts and Belle Ziegohn. Before Roland started school, the family moved to Petoskey where he attended grade school. During the Depression, he moved to Lansing completing high school and graduating from Michigan State College.
In 1940, he married Johanna Rechlin, his college sweetheart.
Roland joined the Navy and trained as an officer. He served aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson as a senior lieutenant during World War II.
Roland's business career included insurance sales and agency ownership, retail hardware management, and accounting in Lansing, Bay City, Detroit and Fort Wayne. He was an active member of Kiwanis and the Lutheran Church; an avid jogger and walker; he enjoyed golf, water activities and above all family. Roland always displayed a sense of wit and good humor ... much appreciated by his family, friends, neighbors and clients.
In 2002, Roland and Jo moved back to Petoskey where they both enjoyed walking the waterfront almost daily.
Roland is survived by his wife, Jo, his daughters Barbara Lindsey of Harbor Springs and Judy Passon of Englewood, Colo., and their husbands, Charles and Craig; four grandchildren, Chad, NYC; Leslie, Omaha; Daric, Boulder; and Allison, Denver: one great-grandchild, Whitney; also his sister, Betty Campbell, sister-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
At his request, no formal service is planned, but a family celebration of life will take place in the near future.
Memorial tributes may be made in his name to a charity of choice or Hiland Cottage.
Arrangements were made through Schiller Funeral Home, Harbor Springs.
