Robert O. "Bob" Nolan, 91, of Harbor Springs, formerly of East Lansing, died Tuesday April 10, 2012.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1920 in Glen Rock, N.J., the son of Clifford and Helen (Rumsey) Nolan. When he was 16, his family moved to Greensboro, N.C., where he graduated from high school and then attended Guilford College, graduating with a BS in 1942. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country in the South Pacific in World War II. He was retired because of disability in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant. He went on to further his education, receiving an MA in education at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
His first teaching job was in Hartford, Conn., and then he went to Appalachian State College in Boone, N.C. In 1952 he was offered a job at Michigan State University in the College of Education. He was a professor for 33 years. He earned his Ed. D in 1965. At the time of his retirement in 1985 he was the director of the Highway Traffic Safety Center at MSU. Bob was an avid MSU fan.
On March 7, 1975, he married Patricia Erler. Upon his retirement, they moved to Harbor Springs.
Bob was a member of the American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association, the Michigan Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Military Officers Association of America, the Marine Corps Association, and an active member of the Marine Corps League, Northern Michigan Detachment 690.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and gardening.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia; a daughter, Sally (Greg) Alksnis, of Ada Mich.; a grandson, Austin Richardson; his brother, Clifford, of Toledo, Ohio; two nephews and their families; and many friends, particularly his MCL buddies.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Northwest Michigan and Vicky of Harbor Care Associates for their dedicated service.
A memorial service in celebration of Bob's life will take place on Friday, June 1, at Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and continuing until the time of the service at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Dave Behling will officiate. The family was served by Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey.
