Donald Samuel Hayden, 84, of East Jordan, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital.
He was born on May 5, 1929, in Detroit, the son of Samuel Archibald and Mildred (Gabrielson) Hayden.
Don married Hope Hartley from Oak Hill, Ill., on May 19,1956.
Don served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. Then from 1950 to until 1987, he worked computers and communications for United Airlines. Don was a founding member of a group of retired United Airlines employees known as the Northwoods Loonies.
Don and Hope lived in Los Angeles for 30 years then moved back home to Northern Michigan in 1987. Don became very active in bowling and antique cars. Don was a member of the Model A Ford Club where he served on the national board for two terms and a member of the AACA local chapter in Boyne City. Don also enjoyed 20 years of acting in murder mysteries and an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of East Jordan.
Don is survived by his wife, Hope; son Sam, (Cindy), of East Jordan; daughter, Kelly (Ray) Wolfbrandt, and daughter-in-law, Diane Hayden, both of California; four grandchildren, Cameron Eastgate of Australia, Taylor Wolfbrandt, Casey and Ranae Hayden, of California; stepgrandson, Ian Davision, of California; stepgranddaughter, Tammy Hennings, of East Jordan; stepgreat-grandson, Tylor Hennings, of East Jordan; one sister, Betty Raulin, of Torrance, Calif. Don was preceded in death by son, Erik, his parents and two brothers.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask donations be directed to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of East Jordan.
Arrangements were handled by the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc., East Jordan.
