Charles E. "Ed" Johnson Jr., age 83, of Cheboygan and formerly of Levering, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his home.
He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to Charles E. and Margaret (McCue) Johnson Sr.
On Oct. 29, 1951, in Mackinaw City, Ed married Lucille M. Fay who preceded him in death on June 1, 2001.
Ed served in the U.S. Army for three years and was honorably discharged in 1949.
He was a member of the Operators Union, Local No. 324 and was a heavy equipment operator for more than 45 years. During that time, he had also worked on the Alaskan Pipeline.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Pellston for more than 59 years and the American Legion in Mackinaw City. In his spare time, Ed enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and volunteering his time with the Shriners driving disabled children to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Chicago.
Survivors include his three children, James E. "Ed" (Cathy) Johnson of Clio, Mich., Daniel J. (Kelly) Johnson of Flint and Cheryl (Glen) Cox of Dunedin, Fla.; one sister, Elizabeth Anderson, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Jeannie) Moore, Cory Moore, Elizabeth Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Matt Johnson and Daniel (Dana) Johnson Jr.; six great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Shelba Johnson.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions in Ed's name may be directed to the American Legion in Mackinaw City.
