Born Virginia Beckett in Shelbina, Mo., and raised in Quincy, Ill., she was the daughter of Everett Beckett, a tool and die maker, and Ruby McFarland Beckett, a homemaker. She attended Western Illinois State University before joining the World War II effort and moving to Maryland. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland College Park in 1967.
She worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Meade. She retired after 45 years of service in the 1990s.
She was an early resident of the Ben Oaks section of Severna Park. She was active in the Ben Oaks Garden Club and was board secretary of the Ben Oaks Civic Association.
She and her husband, David Glenn Tubbs, also owned and operated a Christmas tree farm outside Wytheville, Va. She enjoyed working with families and church groups to select and cut trees.
She was an active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She spent part of the year visiting her daughters and grandchildren who lived outside Maryland.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie Tubbs Pontius of Terre Haute, Ind., and Sandra Tubbs Ramsey of Cincinnati; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband of 44 years died in 1992.
