Virginia B. Machovec, a retired city public school cafeteria cashier and longtime hospital volunteer, died Wednesday of pneumonia at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. She was 92.
The daughter of a Cross Street Market worker and a homemaker, Virginia Baxter Edwards was born and raised in South Baltimore, where she graduated from Southern High School.
In 1947, she married Lawrence J. Machovec Sr., a highly decorated World War II veteran who later became a Baltimore police officer. He died in 2004.
For more than 20 years until retiring in the late 1970s, Mrs. Machovec was the cafeteria cashier at Patterson High School.
She also volunteered for more than 20 years at what is now Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she pushed the gift cart to patients' rooms.
Mrs. Machovec later joined patient relations, where she worked with doctors and patients and their families, said her son, Lawrence J. Machovec Jr. of Pasadena, who is facilities support manager at The Baltimore Sun.
The 60-year Bayview community resident enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Mrs. Machovec was an active communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, 6400 E. Pratt St., where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Machovec is survived by a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
