Peter Young Martin, golf pro

Peter Young Martin, a former golf professional and Green Spring Valley Hunt Club champion, died of a respiratory illness March 31 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. The Owings Mills resident was 64.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of John William Young Martin and Nancy Byers Martin. He was raised at the family home, Snow Hill Farm, site of the Maryland Hunt Cup point-to-point race in the Worthington Valley in Baltimore County.

Mr. Martin attended the Gilman Lower School and was a 1966 graduate of Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Conn. He attended Curry College in Milton, Mass., and later served in the Maryland National Guard.

Family members said he grew up playing golf alongside his mother, who was the daughter of J. Frederick Byers, president of the U.S. Golf Association in 1922.

"My father was an avid athlete across the board," said his daughter, Ashley Martin Brewer of Baltimore. "He was good in every sport, but in his 20s golf became his life."

Mr. Martin became a golf professional. He competed in mini-PGA tours in Florida before returning to Baltimore and playing as an amateur.

He was a champion at the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club and competed in numerous Mid-Atlantic tournaments. Mr. Martin supported The First Tee of Baltimore, an after-school and summer educational program for children, held at Baltimore's Forest Park and Clifton Park golf courses.

He was a former member of the Maryland Club and Green Spring Valley Hunt Club.

"He was a quiet person who was overwhelmingly generous," said his daughter. "He was the first person to write a thank-you note."

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 232 St. Thomas Lane in Owings Mills.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include a son, Peter Young Martin Jr. of Baltimore; two brothers, J.W.Y. Martin Jr. of Glyndon and Alexander B. Martin of Owings Mills; a sister, Carol M. Corrigan of Washington; and a granddaughter. His marriage to Courtney Rice ended in divorce.
