Patrick J. Coughlin III, event planner

Patrick J. Coughlin III, a retired catering and event planning consultant, died of cancer Monday at the Capital Caring Hospice in Arlington, Va. The onetime Ednor Gardens and Homeland resident was 66.

Born in Baltimore and raised in North Baltimore, he was the son of Patrick J. Coughlin Jr., the chairman of Liberty Federal Savings and Loan who died in 1999, and Winifred Lynch Coughlin, a former Baltimore resident who now lives in Watchung, N.J.

Mr. Coughlin was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School and attended Loyola High School and graduated from City College in 1964. He then attended St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

He served two years as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve in San Diego and later earned a degree at the University of San Diego, where he also attended law school.

He worked in catering and event planning in Washington, D.C., and also tended bar in Baltimore.

Family members said Mr. Coughlin was proud of his Irish heritage and belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Mr. Coughlin enjoyed Irish music and history, golf, theater and travel.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Monday at the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 4103 Old York Road, where he had been a member.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his life partner, Carolyn Wheeler of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Sean Coughlin of Berlin on the Eastern Shore; and two sisters, Eileen Bress of New Bern, N.C., and Meaghan Williams of Chatham, N.J.
