The former Mary Lou Hartman was born in Baltimore and raised in Rockdale. She was a graduate of Catonsville High School. In 1945, she married George Harman Pahl.

From the late 1960s until the early 1990s when she retired, Mrs. Pahl was a bank teller at the Savings Bank of Baltimore.

Mrs. Pahl, who moved to Eldersburg a decade ago, enjoyed going to flea markets. She also designed and made jewelry that she sold at various flea markets.
