Mary Jo McCabe, purchasing director

Mary Jo “MJ” McCabe, purchasing director for the Community College of Baltimore County, died Sept. 3 of breast cancer at Stella Maris Hospice. The Owings Mills resident was 59.

The daughter of Josephine Frances McCabe, she was born in Baltimore and raised in the Chestnut Ridge neighborhood of Owings Mills.

She was a 1975 graduate of Franklin High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1979 from Towson University.

Ms. McCabe, who was known as “MJ,” had worked as purchasing director for the Baltimore Hyatt Hotel, Towson University, Harford County government and, for the past 12 years, the Community College of Baltimore County.

She had not retired at her death.

Her professional affiliations included serving as president of the Maryland Public Purchasing Association. She was also a member of the Maryland Community College Procurement Officers and the National Institute of Government Purchasing.

The former Bel Air resident, who recently moved to her childhood home, enjoyed attending social events with family and friends and playing the game bunco.

Ms. McCabe donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board, family members said.

She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 533 E. Jarrettsville Road, Forest Hill, where a funeral Mass will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 26.

Ms. McCabe is survived by a son, James McComack of Owings Mills; a daughter, Lindsay McComack of Bel Air; and three sisters, Dr. Fran McCabe of Pikesville, Karla McCabe Capece of Hampstead and Sharon McCabe Welsch of Bel Air.
