Sister Marie Kevin, musician

Sister Marie Kevin Mueller, a music teacher and member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, died of heart failure Oct. 18 at her order's Maria Health Care Center in the Woodbrook section of Baltimore County. She was 89.

Born Moira Mueller in Baltimore and raised on Dorsey Road in Essex, she attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and was a 1940 graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame. She then entered the Roman Catholic religious order and received the name Marie Kevin. She earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in music from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

In an autobiographical sketch, she said that her family was musically gifted. An uncle played the organ at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Highlandtown for 50 years.

She began taking piano lessons in second grade. She continued to study music through grade school and high school and eventually mastered the piano, organ and flute.

She taught at St. Mark's School in Catonsville and in New Jersey. In 1958, she joined the faculty of Notre Dame Preparatory School on Charles Street and moved with the school to Towson, where she taught music before retiring.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Villa Assumpta, 6401 N. Charles St.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Carroll Mueller of Fullerton; a sister, Adelaide Besche of Timonium; and nieces and nephews.
