Lucine A. Young, a retired longtime city public schools secretary who enjoyed entertaining family and friends, died Nov. 25 of lung disease at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

She was 88 and lived in Pikesville.

Lucine Anita Pitts was born at home on McMechen Street and raised on Carey Street.

After graduating from Frederick Douglass High School in 1940, she continued her education and graduated from the old Cortez Peters Business School on Eutaw Place.

Mrs. Young worked for nearly 40 years for the city public school system, where she was secretary to the mathematics cluster in the elementary education division.

She retired in 1986.

The longtime Belvieu Avenue resident was known for her cooking.

"She made the best homemade rolls, and whenever she asked you to dinner, that was the first question people would ask: 'Are you making your homemade rolls?'" said Mia Colfield, a granddaughter who lives in Pikesville.

"Granma also made wonderful lemon meringue pies and always made sure that her meringue peaks were just right," said Ms. Colfield.

Mrs. Young was also known for her fried chicken and her homemade, nonalcoholic fruit punches.

She loved watching televised tennis matches and basketball star Michael Jordan.

"She didn't care anything about basketball but loved Michael Jordan," said Ms. Colfield.

Mrs. Young was married for 33 years to Donald K. Young Sr., a warehouseman who died in 1973.

She was an active member for many years of Stillmeadow Evangelical Free Church, 5110 Frederick Road, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

In addition to her granddaughter, Mrs. Young is survived by three sons, Frederick H. Young of Woodlawn, Barry K. Young of Baltimore and Rodger W. Young of Oklahoma; a daughter, Theresa Smith of Randallstown; 17 other grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A son, Donald K. Young Jr., died in 1996; another son, Arthur G. Young, died in 2010; and her daughter, Norma Wyatt, died this year.
