John L. Ruth Sr., flower salesman

John L. Ruth Sr., a retired wholesale flower salesman who earlier had been a Maryland state trooper, died Monday of heart failure at his home in Thomasville, Pa. He was 73.

The son of Woodrow G. Ruth, a salesman, and Minnie B. Wenger Ruth, a dress factory worker, John Leroy Ruth Sr. was born and raised in Hagerstown.

Mr. Ruth was a 1959 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and in 1961 joined the Maryland state troopers, serving for a decade.

For 30 years until retiring in 2012, Mr. Ruth was a salesman for Pennock Floral, a wholesale florist, in Baltimore.

Mr. Ruth was an inveterate bowler and enjoyed playing pinochle.

A celebration of Mr. Ruth's life will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Dublin United Methodist Church, 1528 Whiteford Road in Street.

Mr. Ruth is survived by two sons, John L. Ruth Jr. of Durham, N.C., and James A. Ruth of Atlanta; a daughter, Patricia R. Williams of Burtonsville; a stepson, Joseph Amig of Hanover, Pa.; a brother, Stephen B. Ruth of Darlington; a sister, Roxanne Laird of Cumberland; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by two wives, the former Dorothy Cuddy and the former Brenda Amig.
