Highway and Road DisastersTransportation Disasters

John R. Graybeal, a Howard County farm employee, was killed July 26 in a single-car crash in Woodbine. He was 22.

Mr. Graybeal was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta southwest on Daisy Road in Woodbine when he failed to negotiate a curve. His car left the road and hit a tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, as was a passenger, Leah Christine McElgunn, 20, of Catonsville.

Howard County police told The Baltimore Sun that excessive speed appeared to be the cause of the accident. The accident remains under investigation, said Mr. Graybeal's father, John C. Graybeal Jr. of Woodbine.

John Reuben Graybeal was born in Baltimore and raised in Sykesville, and for the last eight years lived in Woodbine.

While at Glenelg High School, from which he graduated in 2009, Mr. Graybeal was a member of the track team and excelled at the pole vault.

"John loved boating, shooting sports and was a car enthusiast," his father said. "He was a natural athlete who could ride a unicycle, skateboard or snowboard."

He was active in the Boy Scouts and had been a counselor at Broad Creek Boy Scout camp in Harford County. He had been a member of the 4-H West Friendship Livestock Club and had showed sheep at the Howard County Fair.

He had been employed at the John L. Wilson Lumber Co., and since last year, had worked at Clark's Elioak Farm, where he drove hayrides and assisted in the petting zoo.

Mr. Graybeal was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, 12470 Old Frederick Road, Marriottsville, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In addition to his father and his mother, Barbara Graybeal, Mr. Graybeal is survived by his daughter, Ariella Nichole Graybeal, 3, who lives with her mother, Nichole Kesteven of Sykesville; two brothers, Drew Graybeal of Columbia and Adam Graybeal of Glen Burnie; paternal grandfather and step-grandmother, John C. Graybeal Sr. and Libby Graybeal of Hanover, Pa.; and maternal grandparents, Carl H. and Molly Reifeis of Punta Gorda, Fla.
