Jerry R. Engelman, a retired real estate broker who specialized in ground rents, died May 8 of heart failure at his Pikesville home. He was 70.
The son of Paul Engelman, a real estate broker, and Doris Engelman, a homemaker, Jerry Ronald Engelman was born in Baltimore and raised on Cylburn Avenue in the city's Pimlico neighborhood.
After graduating from City College in 1962, he earned a law degree in 1966 from the University of Baltimore.
Rather than practice law, Mr. Engelman earned his real estate broker's license and worked from 1966 to 1968 for the Baltimore Housing Authority and for two years for the Army Audit Agency. He then started his own company, Jerry R. Engelman Real Estate, that specialized in buying and selling ground rents and property management.
Mr. Engelman retired four years ago because of declining health. His wife of 43 years, the former Carol Kappelman, continued operating the business.
He was an inveterate fundraiser for the Baltimore chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Association. He enjoyed collecting coins.
Mr. Engelman was a member of Beth El Congregation.
Funeral services were held May 12 at Sol Levinson & Bros. Funeral Home in Pikesville.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Engelman is survived by a son, David P. Engelman of Lutherville; a daughter, Robyn E. Cantor of North Potomac; a brother, Peter G. Engelman of Pikesville; and five grandchildren.
