Jeffrey F. Bayliss, chemical engineer

Jeffrey F. Bayliss, a chemical engineer who was the president and owner of Spray Drying Systems Inc., died April 2 of complications from cancer at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was 52.

The son of Ronald W. Bayliss, a chemical engineer, and N. Ruth Theisz Bayliss, a homemaker, Jeffrey Francis Bayliss was born and raised in Flemington, N.J.

After graduating in 1979 from Hunterdon Central High School, he earned a degree in 1985 in chemical engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

Mr. Bayliss began his career working at the W. R. Grace & Co. plant in Curtis Bay, and was transferred to the company's Lake Charles, La., facility.

In 1994, he joined Spray Drying Systems Inc., which was founded by his father. The business supplies spray dryers to manufacturing facilities.

Mr. Bayliss purchased the Eldersburg business in 2006, which he operated with his wife, the former Rosemary Mimi Kunkle.

The longtime Westminster resident was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

He was an avid fantasy football and baseball fan, said his wife, who is now president of Spray Drying Systems Inc.

Mr. Bayliss was also a world traveler.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, in Eldersburg.

In addition to his wife of 26 years, Mr. Bayliss is survived by his son, Jason R. Bayliss of Westminster; a daughter, Jennifer R. Bayliss of Westminster; his father, of Reading, Pa.; a brother, Douglas R. Bayliss of Littlestown, Pa.; and his stepmother, Patricia Bayliss of Reading, Pa.
