Genevieve Beatrice Scriba was born in Baltimore and raised on Hollins Street. She was a parochial school graduate, family members said.
She was married in 1943 to Grant W. Miller Sr., a career Army officer, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Miller, who lived briefly in France during her husband's Army days, spent most of her life in Catonsville.
From the 1950s until the 1980s, Mrs. Miller worked as a sales associate at the Kirk-Stieff Silver Co. store in Security Mall, and later at the Hecht Co. department store in Edmondson Village.
In 2000, Mrs. Miller who participated in the Baltimore County Department of Aging's "Significant Memories of the 20th Century" writing contest, recalled her childhood growing up near the Hollins Market during the Depression, which, she wrote, "didn't affect us much as we were already poor."
Her father died when she was very young. To support the family, her mother scrubbed floors at Bon Secours Hospital.
"Things were cheaper at night as the vendors were ready to leave for the day," she wrote. "We used to take a wagon to carry our fruits and vegetables home. Small baskets of cantaloupes, tomatoes, and peaches. When we got home our mother would fry tomatoes for us. Delicious fried tomatoes! We didn't have much meat, but we always had lots of vegetables."
Mrs. Miller also recalled her mother purchasing cracked eggs because they were cheaper, and a man selling chickens from crates stacked up outside of the market.
"Imagine eating meat sold outside or cracked eggs," she wrote. "At this time in our life, it seems unreal."
Mrs. Miller was an active communicant and volunteer at St. Joseph's Passionist Monastery Roman Catholic Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Liberty Road, Sykesville.
Surviving are four sons, Grant W. Miller Jr. of Bethany Beach, Del., Dennis Miller and Kevin Miller, both of Catonsville, and Gregory Miller of Westminster; a daughter, Mary Margaret Schrieffer of Littlestown, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Elizabeth Ann Ehrhart, died in 2010.
