Born Carolyn Patricia Grace Byers in Front Royal, Va., she was the daughter of an Army instructor who also sold fabrics and sewing machines. Her mother was a homemaker.
Mrs. King attended Dundalk High School. She was a 1980 graduate from the Baltimore School of the Bible.
She became active in Catonsville Baptist Church and had been a member of the Faith Bible Church in Elkridge for the past 35 years.
In 1977, she became director of the Child Evangelism Fellowship in Howard County. Twenty-three years later she became state director of the Children's Bible Ministries of Maryland, a post she held at her death.
"She was an extremely loving person," said her son, Darrin King of Elkridge. "She was a wise person who was young at heart. One of her greatest joys was cooking for her family. She made herself available to anyone who needed assistance."
Family members said she trained teachers, supported children's ministries, ran summer camps and trained young adults in mission work. Her missionaries traveled to Ghana, Hong Kong, South America and China.
She traveled to Ireland, England and Burma on missionary trips.
She also enjoyed baking, drawing and painting.
Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Faith Bible Church, 5810 Timberview Drive, Elkridge.
In addition to her son, survivors include four other sons, David King of Elkridge, Dean King of Los Angeles, Daniel King of Aylett, Va. and Dennis King of Elkridge; a brother, Steve Byers of Elkridge; a sister, Jeanie Huffman of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Her 1955 marriage to David King Sr., a Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point weigh master, ended in divorce.
