John S. Wisniewski, a retired Veterans Administration attorney and decorated World War II Army officer, died of a stroke Sept. 22 at the Frederick Villa Nursing Home. The Catonsville resident was 93.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Canton, he attended St. Casimir's Parochial School and was a 1933 Calvert Hall College High School graduate. After completing two years at Loyola College, he earned a law degree from the University of Baltimore. He was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1938.

During World War II he served in the Army and was stationed in the Philippines and saw combat action at Panay Island. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

He was recalled to active service as a policy and planning officer in the Pentagon during the Korean War. He retired from the reserves in 1975 as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Wisniewski worked for the Veterans Administration in its Baltimore Regional Office before transferring to the VA Central Office in Washington in 1967.

He was deputy director of the Compensation and Pension Service.

In 1979 he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the Senior Executive Service.

He retired in 1981 and was given the Veterans Administration's Distinguished Career Award.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He belonged to the Fort Meade Retiree Advisory Council. He enjoyed chess and golf.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Delores Patterson; a daughter, Dianna Mikolajczyk of Glen Burnie; and two grandsons.

Services were held Sept. 26.
