John Sears Gibbs IV

Age 72 Educator taught at Calvert School and Boys' Latin, spent summers in Maine.

John Sears Gibbs IV, a retired educator who enjoyed spending summers in Maine, died of heart failure Sunday at his Guilford home. He was 72.

Mr. Gibbs was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park.

He was a 1954 graduate of Gilman School and earned a bachelor's degree from Washington & Lee University in 1958. He also held a master's degree from the Johns Hopkins University.

He taught second- and third-graders at the Calvert School from 1958 to 1978. In 1979, he joined the faculty of Boys' Latin School, where he taught in the middle school until retiring in 1994.

For many years, Mr. Gibbs was assistant director at Moose Cove Lodge in Bridgton, Maine.

In addition to vacationing in Maine, Mr. Gibbs enjoyed visiting the beach.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Ave., Pikesville.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Peggy J. Skinner; two sons, John Sears Gibbs V of Baltimore and Peter Macqueen Gibbs of Ellicott City; a daughter, Mary Dixon Gibbs-Westbrook of West Lafayette, Ind.; a brother, William T.D. Gibbs Jr. of Baltimore; a sister, Mary Gibbs Piper of Baltimore; and four grandchildren.
