Aberdeen: Anna Marie Smith, 77, of Aberdeen formerly of Monango, N.D., died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Anna was born Feb. 16, 1935, in rural Hillsview. She was the daughter of George and Karolina (Guthmiller) Ketterling. Anna was raised in the rural Long Lake area and educated in country schools. After her education, she was employed at Halls Cafe in Ellendale, N.D.
On June 27, 1955, Anna married Gene Smith in Aberdeen. After they were married, Anna was an active farm wife who enjoyed raising poultry, loved gardening, cooking, embroidering and spending time with her grandchildren. Anna was an avid pool player on both women's and men's leagues for several years.
Anna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale and LWML. Anna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a good listener and a person who could always be counted on for helping friends and family.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Smith, Monango, N.D.; three sons: Tim Smith, Monango, N.D., David (Angie) Smith, Eureka, Harley Smith, Wahpeton, N.D.; one daughter, Peggy Smith, Custer; six grandchildren: Amber Miller, Austin Smith, Allyssa Moch, Cody, Justin and Emily Smith; three great-grandchildren: Shelby, Walker and Marlee Miller; two sisters: Esther Schock, Aberdeen, Emma Kleinknecht, Jamestown, N.D.; one brother, Martin Ketterling, Bismarck, N.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale, with Pastor Patrick O'Brien officiating.
Visitation will be 2-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., at Hoven Funeral Chapel in Ellendale.
Burial will be in Monango City Cemetery.
