Robert James Vance, 73, of Brookings died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Sanford Hospice Foundation Cottage in Sioux Falls.
Robert James Vance was born on Feb. 26, 1939, at Huron to George and Lorraine (Stern) Vance. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1957 and entered the U.S. Navy, serving for 4 1/2 years. Bob worked for the Red Owl food chain for 34 years in various positions and eventually owned The Red Owl store in Arlington for 12 years. He then worked for the Daktronics Company for 19 years. After his retirement, he worked for the Brookings School District. Bob was a member of the VFW and was a 22-year member of the Arlington Fire Dept.
Bob married Leota Kopplin on April 5, 1964, in Redfield.
He is survived by his wife, Leota, of Brookings; three sons: Dave (Mary Jo) of Hartford, Brent (Nicole) of South Sioux City, Neb., and Brian (Michele) of Ellendale, N.D.; four grandchildren: Ashley, Brianna, Miranda and Brennen; two brothers: George (Linda) Vance in Arizona, Dean (Jill) Bacon of Worthing; two sisters: Bev (Ron) Whitley of Redfield and Patti (Hal) Hill of Huron.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Elbert Bacon; a grandson, Jonathan Gabriel; brother, Donavon; and a sister, Janice; his in-laws, Milton and Ruby Kopplin; and a sister-in-law, Naomi Bacon.
Funeral services for Mr. Vance will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings with Pastor Rhonda Hanisch officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Tulare Cemetery at Tulare.
Visitation will be one hour before services on Friday at the church.
