The funeral service for Helen Mae Reuer, 90, of Aberdeen will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.
Helen died Sunday, July 7, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Helen Mae Melcher was born on June 17, 1923, on the family farm near Westport, to Hugo and Pearl (Roundy) Melcher. She attended rural school and graduated from Central High School. Helen was employed at Gambles Department Store and became supervisor of the infants department.
On June 24, 1944, Helen was united in marriage to Fred F. Reuer in Aberdeen. They resided in Aberdeen their entire lives.
Helen was baptized in the Westport Methodist Church. She has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 72 years, serving in all offices of the Women of the Church. She also served many years as deacon. Helen worked for 25 years in the City and County Assessor’s offices. After retiring, she worked many years as a bailiff for the then Municipal Court and later for Brown County Circuit Court. She also was on the election board. Helen and Fred were members of Aberdeen Belles and Beaux Square Dance Club for over 40 years. They danced in many states and Canada. Helen and Fred also enjoyed many bus trips together.
Grateful for having shared in Helen’s life are her daughter, Peggy (Paul) Sandberg of Dubuque, Iowa; and two granddaughters: Katrina (Mark) Goacher, Flower Mound, Texas and Melanie Sandberg of Cambridge, Mass.; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Goacher; and a second great-granddaughter scheduled to arrive next month. Also surviving Helen is her sister, Oriole (Calvin) Nelson of Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Melcher of Ellendale, N.D., and Ceil Edrich of Hoven; and her brother-in-law, Clayton Permann of Mobridge.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Reuer; parents, Hugo and Pearl Melcher; and brother, Merlyn Melcher.
