Dayton, Ohio: The funeral service for Gertrude Viola Hoffman, 86, of Dayton, Ohio and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Gertrude died on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, in Dayton.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, from 1 to 7 p.m., with family present from 4 to 7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Gertrude Viola (Kaul) Hoffman was born Oct. 26, 1926, to Jacob and Erna (Gohl) Kaul of Ashley, N.D. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Ashley, attended country school and graduated in 6 years. She was fluent in German and learned English in school. In 1942, she moved with her family to a farm northeast of Leola.
She married Richard O. Hoffman at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola on Oct. 17, 1948. They lived on Richard’s home place for 25 years prior to moving to Aberdeen in 1973. They resided at 1303 S. Merton St. and attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Gertrude moved to Ohio to be closer to her daughter and family in 2011.
Friends and family were always welcome in her home and were blessed by her good company and great food. She enjoyed visiting with her many cousins, family and friends when not doing ceramics, sewing, gardening or reading.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Joseph) Mayhew of Springboro, Ohio; and one son, James (Karol) Hoffman of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; grandchildren: Krista (Darren) Palmer, Sioux Falls; Carson (Renata) LuzHoxsie, Mesa, Ariz.; Cadet (Lissa) Hoxsie, Sioux Falls, Katie (Derek) McDaniel, Milford, Ohio, Elizabeth Hoffman, Raleigh, N.C.; Joseph and Katherine Hoffman of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Hans and Claire LuzHoxsie, Mesa, Ariz.; Jake and Ashley Palmer, Kennedy and London Hoxsie, Sioux Falls; brothers: Herbert (Sandy) Kaul, Bismarck, N.D. and Elmer (late Marcie) Kaul, Bismarck, N.D.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one infant brother.
